SU19-03 “Their Finest Hour:” The British and the Blitz

After France fell to the Nazi war machine in June 1940, Adolf Hitler turned his sights on the island nation across the Channel. Thus began the epic Battle of Britain. For many long months, the British people stood alone as the bombs fell, with only their courage and stamina to sustain them as they fought back. Tested as never before, it was indeed their finest hour and richly deserves to be revisited in this course, which will combine political, military, diplomatic, and above all social history.

Alfred Jones taught American history to college and university students for more than 30 years. He says they keep him on his toes with their probing questions and wide reading.
