For much of the 20th century, Carl Sandburg was, if not the Voice of America, one of its significant and honored voices. How does what he said, wrote, and represented hold up in the 21st century? Where is he wise; where is he naïve; what does he say that is timeless and universal, and what has faded in the direction of marginal relevance? Is Sandburg’s standing in literary and cultural consciousness an example of Cultural Amnesia? To appreciate, and differentiate between, what is enduring and what is dated in Sandburg’s writing, we will interactively read his marathon poem “The People, Yes.” Is it still The People Yes, or has it become The People, Yes, No, and Maybe? Please bring to class The Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg, published by Harcourt, Inc., or any edition of “The People, Yes.”

“Why Isn’t That Politician in Prison?” In 2016, the United States Supreme Court made it much more difficult to convict a public officer of bribery. Bob McDonnell, the former governor of Virginia, did many things that a federal jury believed qualified as bribery-related crimes, yet the Supreme Court disagreed and reversed his conviction. While one could agree that it was a distasteful decision, the court said it was necessary when federal corruption laws collided with the constitutional rights of constituents. These include the right to contribute to a public officer and to call upon that officer, once elected, to perform job-related services on behalf of a constituent—services like arranging meetings with other government officers, writing recommendations for school admission, and providing assistance with navigating government-agency red tape. In this class, we’ll take a look at a few of the bribery-related federal offenses most frequently used to charge public officials with corruption, and how the courts have construed cases involving such prosecutions after the McDonnell decision. We’ll also look at some local laws to see if they effectively fill the gap in punishing public officials for errant deeds. No experience in politics or prison necessary. Come and have fun. Discussion encouraged!
