Qi Gong (pronounced chee goong) is an ancient Chinese art, science, and health maintenance system used to relax the mind and body, and overall to enhance, restore, and maintain health. It combines movement with mental focus and breath. Since it can be practiced while walking, standing, or sitting, anyone of any age or condition can easily make Qi Gong a vital part of his or her fitness program. Research has shown its greatest benefit to seniors may be its capacity to improve balance and prevent falls. And because of the positive effects its slow, gentle, circular movements have on the joints, the Arthritis Foundation officially recommends Qi Gong exercises for arthritis pain. In addition, Qi Gong may promote faster recovery from strokes and heart attacks, enhance mental capacity and concentration, reduce blood pressure, improve lower body and leg strength, promote deep breathing, relaxation, and restful sleep, manage anxiety and worry, reduce bone loss in menopausal women, and slow the aging process. If you are looking for a low-impact, relaxing form of exercise that offers tremendous benefits, Qi Gong may be for you.

The emphasis in class sessions is upon Dong Gong, which intends to dispel physical and emotional blockages through the practice of Qi Gong form movements. The instructional environment for this course is noncompetitive and emphasizes safe, motivational, group-oriented practice to enrich the quality of life.

An introduction to the Small Circulation Abdominal Breathing Circuit (Xiao Zhou Tian) is directed toward the purpose of encouraging practitioners to experience this state of calm mind and a peaceful heart. The Dong Gong Crane form and its accompanying massage and bone Qi Gong itinerary (as practiced in the First Level Qi Gong classes), will be continued and expanded as the gathering and channeling of “upright qi” is absolutely essential to Small Circulation Breathing Cosmic System. There will also be an introduction to the Silk Exercises (Baduanjin) depending upon session progress.
