(No Class on Jan. 21; Holiday) Photographer or not, if you wish to experience life to the fullest, this is the class for you. A photography course unlike any other—the focus is more on seeing better, rather than the camera, as we bring to life Dorothea Lang’s axiom that “the camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” In addition to viewing many photographs, we also utilize art, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, and storytelling. This is a highly interactive class that aims to enrich your life with awe, mystery, beauty, happiness, joy, and of course, better photographs.

Barry Bub, a native of South Africa, has worked as a physician, Gestalt psychotherapist, chaplain, author, educator, and professional mentor. His talks and experiential workshops are offered to wide ranging audiences. He serves on the adjunct faculty of Temple University Medical School, and his current passions include art, photography, and storytelling.

Going out with friends to photograph is fun. Join us! We photograph at locations in and around Sarasota. The following week, in the classroom, we look at our photos with friendly commentary. The French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson said of photography, “Doesn’t take any brains, takes sensitivity, a finger and two legs. But it is beautiful when you feel that your body is working or, like this, full of air and in contact with nature, it’s beautiful.” Students may repeat this class. Class placement advice: The class is more about sensitivity and less about technical stuff. Are you using an ILC/mirrorless camera, or a DSLR? If so, and you want to learn about the tools of photography, consider taking Digital Photography 1 – Basic Camera Tools. Cellphones or any digital camera are okay. Bring your camera’s manual if you have it. Make sure the battery is charged and that there’s space on the memory card. Got a question? Ask the teacher, Jim Beecher, at http://www.photokaboom.com/ask_Jim.php.
