The adage 90% of what you learn you forget. 90% of what you experience you remember totally applies to street photography. This course, based on the book “It’s Not About the F-Stop” by noted photographer Jay Maisel, is designed to be mostly experiential and practical. We will tap the wisdom in the book, practice some street photography exercises, participate in optional photo assignments (outings between teaching sessions), and then review our photographs in class. Join us for a fun, stimulating, and educational class.

(No Class on Jan. 21; Holiday) Photographer or not, if you wish to experience life to the fullest, this is the class for you. A photography course unlike any other—the focus is more on seeing better, rather than the camera, as we bring to life Dorothea Lang’s axiom that “the camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” In addition to viewing many photographs, we also utilize art, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, and storytelling. This is a highly interactive class that aims to enrich your life with awe, mystery, beauty, happiness, joy, and of course, better photographs.

Clyde Butcher: “Color is a reproduction of nature, while black and white is an interpretation, there’s much more creativity involved. I look for textures and forms and shapes and light, where color photographers are looking for colors.” Color is forceful. You may have a photograph that “says” shape— but the color dominates. The photograph becomes about color — not shape. You will learn how to see in black-and-white, in class and in the field, including how to use contrast, tone, shadow, shape, and texture. Instructor will also demonstrate toning (sepia, etc.) and the use of filters (red, etc.). Depending on the needs of the class, cyanotype prints may be developed using negatives (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanotype). Materials fee to be collected in class. Lightroom is fun! Ease of use and comprehensive features make Lightroom a good choice. In Lightroom, activities are gathered into modules. In the Library Module, you can easily organize your photographs into collections (albums). In the Develop module, developing your snaps is a snap. Students may use a computer in the lab or can bring in a laptop. If using a school computer, you’ll need a large-capacity flash drive. A 128 MB flash drive is about $28. Windows users can use a flash drive or an external hard drive. Got a question? Ask the teacher, Jim Beecher, at http://www.photokaboom.com/ask_Jim.php. Note #1 As of October, 2017, there are three versions of Lightroom, described below. Purchase Lightroom 6 or Lightroom Classic CC. Don’t buy Lightroom CC. 1) Lightroom 6: You own the program. The cost is about $150. You can download it or can get DVDs. The program won’t be updated after 2017. Go to https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/download-install-single-app-Lightroom-6.html 2) Lightroom Classic CC: Your photographs are stored on your computer. You subscribe to Lightroom Classic CC for about $10/monthly. For more information, go to https://www.adobe.com/products/catalog.html. Again, purchase one of the above versions. Be careful—don’t buy the version below. 3) Lightroom CC: Your photographs are stored at Adobe (in the cloud). The interface is different from the above two versions. Lightroom CC is not used in our class. Note #2 – Windows Users Lightroom requires a 64-bit version of Windows. Press the Windows key + Pause key. Look for System Type. If you see 32-bit, contact Jim at http://www.photokaboom.com/ask_Jim.php. Note #3 – Lightroom 5 Users If you’re using Lightroom 5 on a laptop, you can use it in class. If you’re using Lightroom 5 on your desktop computer, you’ll need to get one of the above versions of Lightroom.
